Remember when the tape was en vogue, back in the days before it was displaced by compact discs and then vanished from the consumer market? Well, turns out it’s still very much in fashion in the corporate world, where demand for data storage is fast outstripping supply.

Fujifilm has announced it will offer its tape-based Object Archive solution as a service (you could call it TaaS) for a transparent, one-off fee. You can store up to one Petabyte (that’s one million GB) in a datacenter for up to five years for a mere $46,100.

That’s $0.77 per TB per month, without the additional egress costs, and there’s even an S3 API for Amazon’s popular cloud storage service.

• Check out our list of the best cloud brokers on the market Compared to Backblaze, one of the cheapest online cloud backup services around, Fujifilm’s offering is about 85% cheaper over five years.                                                                                                                                                                                                                       Data is stored in the newly developed OTF (Open Tape Format) on two copies, in a way that mimics RAID-0; 180 LTO-8 and 350 LTO-7 tapes are provided. For added security, the archived data is also air-gapped.

“The customer can request the latest LTO generation (ie. LTO-9) upon renewal of their subscription. The customer is required to upgrade to the latest tape drive technology (LTO-9 drives if the customer is requesting LTO-9 media) before the shipment of media,”

A shorter 3-year subscription is also available for $35,940, which is slightly more expensive in the long run at $1 per TB per month.
Just bear in mind, this is a cold storage solution, similar to Amazon’s Glacier, and as such is unlikely to suit scenarios where data needs to be moved to and from the storage tier regularly.

The device is powered by octa-core Snapdragon 720G SoC processor and a 4,300mAh battery that supports 30W VOOC Flash Charge 4.0. On the backside, there is a quad-camera setup that includes a 64MP Samsung GW1 primary sensor with an f/1.8 lens, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle shooter with an f/2.3 aperture, 12MP telephoto shooter with an f/2.5 aperture, and a 2MP macro shooter with an f/2.4 aperture.

For selfies, there will be a dual hole-punch selfie camera including a 16MP Sony IMX471 primary sensor with an f/2.0 lens and an 8MP secondary sensor with an ultra-wide-angle f/2.2 lens and a field-of-view (FoV) of 105º. What is it?

The facility is available under the NUUP (National Unified USSD Platform) service, which was launched by the National Payments Corp. of India (NPCI), initially in 2012, and then in 2014, with a wider range of services and coverage. The service works on a USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) communication protocol. It is a communication technology that is used to send texts between a mobile phone and an application program in the network and works only on GSM (Global System for Mobile) phones.

How does it work?

The NUUP service works by bringing together all the banks and telecom service providers and lets a customer access banking services on the Unified Payments Interface (UPI).

You simply need to dial *99# on the phone, and wait for a few seconds. The service options will appear on your screen. These options include transferring funds using your mobile number, UPI ID, IFSC and bank account number, and so on. Use the desired service by dialling the number mentioned adjacent to the service. You can also request for money transfer to yourself using the mobile number or UPI ID, or check your bank balance, generate and change UPI PIN, and so on. The service enables you to send money even to a person who is not using the NUUP service. However, for this service to work, your mobile number should be registered for mobile banking services with your bank.

Transactions:

According to NPCI(National Payments Corporation of India), the service can be availed 24*7 and works even on holidays. To avoid misuse, RBI has set a limit of ₹5,000 per transaction which is quite good in my opinion. There are no extra charges from the bank’s end for performing the transactions through this USSD code but according to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) guidelines, your network provider may charge up to ₹1.50 per transaction.

Things to remember:

There is no risk of this service being misused even if you lose your phone as the user will need to enter the UPI PIN to carry out any transaction. However, it is recommended that you immediately inform the bank and deactivate mobile banking services to avoid any misuse.

Also, once you have initiated the transfer of funds, it cannot be cancelled, stopped or reversed as the service uses Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) service, which is an instant inter-bank fund transfer service. If there are any complaints or issues while using this service, you can get in touch with your bank or telecom service provider, depending on the kind of issue you are facing.

How to enable Instagram Music feature in India

1. Update your Instagram app to the latest version.
2. Open Instagram on your phone.
3. Go to the stories section.
4. Click on the ‘Music’ section between Type and Live option.
5. You will see a list/library of songs from various genres. Scroll down or search your favourite music.
6. Click on your favourite track, and it will start playing a 30-second section from the song.
7. You can share it now or select a particular part from the song and share it in stories.
